James Marvel was born and raised in New Orleans and received his B.A. in World Literature from Sarah Lawrence College and Oxford University, England. He holds an M.F.A. in Theatre Arts from the International Actor Training Academy and conducted additional studies at Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic.
James made his operatic debut in 1999, directing COSÌ FAN TUTTE for the newly formed Opera Domani in New York. In September of 2000, he directed THREEPENNY OPERA for the Nevada Conservatory Theatre ; and in April 2001 he thrilled audiences with his first production of LA TRAVIATA for Boheme Opera, NJ . Critics described this production as “an artistic triumph performed before an ultimately ecstatic audience of 1,900.”
In the 2001-2002 season, James debuted at the Piedmont Opera (NC), directing MADAMA BUTTERFLY. In January, James directed LA TRAVIATA for the Nevada Opera Theatre ; and in March he debuted at Augusta Opera directing a new production of FAUST, which was named “Best Production of the Year” by the Augusta Chronicle. In July, James directed FALSTAFF for Intermezzo Opera in Connecticut. In November, James debuted at Opera Santa Barbara with LA BOHÈME and returned to Boheme Opera, NJ, where he also directed LA BOHÈME.
