James Marvel

In 2003, James directed MADAMA BUTTERFLY for the Virginia Opera and debuted at Florence Gould Hall in New York City directing Poulenc's LA VOIX HUMAINE and Menotti's THE TELEPHONE. The success of this production led to additional performance dates at the Royal Conservatory in Brussels, Belgium. In the Summer of 2003, James directed CAVALLERIA RUSTICANA for Opera of the Hamptons and returned to Intermezzo to direct the MARRIAGE OF FIGARO and DIE FLEDERMAUS. In December, he directed the Southern Premiere of a new Christopher Durang play at the Southern Repertory Theatre in New Orleans. In January of 2004, James debuted with the Knoxville Opera and directed ROMEO AND JULIET for Boston University / Huntington Theatre.

Upcoming jobs include THE MARRIAGE OF FIGARO for the San Francisco Opera Merola Program ; MADAMA BUTTERFLY for Longview Opera (TX); FAUST for Opera Santa Barbara; and RIGOLETTO for the Utah Festival Opera. James will also be teaching his audition techniques class for the Adler Fellows of the San Francisco Opera in October of 2004.

James has also remained busy directing theatre at a number of venues throughout the United States and Europe. In December of 2000, James made his debut at the Passage Theatre Company (NJ), where he directed and acted in DEATH OF THE SUN and EVERYTHING UNDER THE SUN. In June of 2002, James was invited to direct a second production of DEATH OF THE SUN for the InterAct Theatre Company of Philadelphia , as part of the National Festival of New Plays .
