James has enjoyed repeated engagements with the Passage Theatre , directing and writing new plays for the company's summer and winter projects. Additional theatre directing credits include THE CENCI, DUCHESS OF MALFI, and Brecht's CAUCASIAN CHALK CIRCLE at the Williamstown Theatre Fringe Festival ; and SIX DEGREES OF SEPARATION, THE SECRET RAPTURE at the Frances Ann Canon Theatre in Bronxville, NY.
For three years (1997-2000), James worked as a company member of the Clarence Brown Theatre (TN), appearing in Liviu Ciulei's renowned production of A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM; the world premier of Peter Muller's award-winning play SHADOW OF THE VAMPIRE; and the U.S. premier of the Hungarian classic A DANCE IN TIME. As an actor, James has appeared in PRINCESS TURANDOT at the Williamstown Theatre Festival and in HAMLET with the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra . In June 2000, he played Orestes in Aeschylus' ORESTEIA at the National Theatre of Slovakia in Bratislava. In 1999, James performed his one-man show THE LUNATIC, THE LOVER, AND THE POET at the Edinburgh Festival in Scotland. He was also an original member of THE RIOT GROUP, which won 5 star reviews and the coveted Fringe First Award at the 1999 and 2002 Edinburgh Festivals.
