Like good friends and fine wine, the enjoyment of an opera is tremendously enhanced by knowing and understanding what's going on.
You may read the synopsis in the program and follow the action of the characters on the stage, enjoying the beautiful music, magnificent sets and lavish costumes. But knowing every word, as it is sung, adds a level of understanding that transforms the experience from a "nice" one to a profoundly moving and meaningful event.
Supertitles are a tool used to help the audience understand operas sung in a foreign language. The text of the opera is translated into English and then projected onto a screen located above the stage at the same moment the singers are singing them .
Supertitles change at a comfortable rate so that everyone can follow the action. You will get every joke, witness the passionate professions of love and protestations of fidelity, catch all the insults uttered, even know what is going through all the characters minds when everybody is singing at once!
